The Patriot《

TAVINGTON: I dare to presume my own meager contributions willberewarded one day.

CORNWALLIS: You may presume too much. His Majesty, likehistory, judges us not only by the outcome of the war and the mannerinwhich it was fought. Although we serve the Crown, and wemustconduct ourselves accordingly. Surrounding troops will begivenquarter. These brutal tactics must stop!

TAVINGTON: Is it not enough, my lord, that I have never lostabattle?

CORNWALLIS: You serve me and the manner in which you servemereflects upon me. I wouldve thought that a gentleman from afamilyas esteemed as yours would understand that.

TAVINGTON: My late father squandered any esteem in which wewereheld along with my inheritance. I advance myself onlythroughvictory.

CORNWALLIS: You advance yourself only through my goodgraces. These colonials are our brethren. And when this conflict isover,we will reestablish commerce with them. Do youunderstand,Colonel?

  TAVINGTON: Perfectly, my lord.

GABRIEL: Reverend, with your permission, Id like to makeanannouncement.

REV. OLIVER: Young man, this is a house of God.

GABRIEL: I understand, Reverend, and I apologize. TheSouthCaroline militia is being called up. Im here to enlisteverymanwilling.

REV. OLIVER: Son, we are here to pray for the souls of thosemenhanging outside.

GABRIEL: Yes, pray for them. But honor them by taking up armswithus.

HARDWICK: And bring more suffering to this town?

SCOTT: If King George can hang those men, our friends, he canhangany one of us.

ANNE: Dan Scott, barely a week ago I heard you railed fortwohours about independence. Mr. Hardwick, how many times have Iheardyou speak of freedom at my fathers table? Half the men inthischurch, including you, Father, and you, Reverend, are asardentpatriots as I. Will you know, when you are needed most, stopatonly words? Is that the sort of men you are? I ask only thatyouact upon the beliefs of which you have so strongly spoken andinwhich you so strongly believe.

  GABRIEL: Whos with us?

  1. quarter

He has gotnoquarter from the competitors whom he had forced out ofbusiness.

  quarter

常用来搭配的表达有to give quarter,to ask for quarter。

  2. good graces

再给大家介绍一个关于good graces的短语:with good graces,意思是欣然地,例如:Theyhadtried hard to win but accepted their loss with good grace.

  3. Call up

He was called up foractiveduty.

These stories call up old times.

I asked him to call up thelastquarters sales figures.

  4. Take up arms

The Kurds took up arms against the Iranians at least twocenturiesago.

Some believe its the vice-presidents job to take up the armsforthe president.

Militias, a form of citizen-based defense that shapedearlyAmerican history and created an American tradition ofcitizensoldiery. Early American colonies faced dangers fromNativeAmerican and European foes. Colonial governmentsquicklyestablished universal military obligation for white males. At itssimplest, men were armed or ordered to arm themselves, organizedinto units, and trained. In practice, the compulsorymilitia systemworked poorly.

The American Revolution gave new life to the militia. Asunrestgrew, revolutionary governments formed that subverted themilitiaaway from royal governors. The militia formed a majorportion ofpatriot forces, achieving fame at Lexington and BunkerHill in1775, and playing important roles in American victoriesthroughoutthe war, such as Saratoga (1777) and Cowpens (1781). Justas often, however, militias proved unreliable, breaking in battle orleavingbefore a battle could even be fought. George Washingtonpenned afamous lament about the militia in 1776: They come in youcannottell how, go you cannot tell when, and act you cannot tellwhere, consume your provisions, exhaust your stores, and leave youat lastat a critical moment. Yet Washington himself had ashrewdunderstanding of how to use militias as auxiliary andpartisanforces in his campaigns. In addition to strictly militaryconcerns, the militia played an important role in securing thecountrysideand subduing Loyalist sentiment.
