The Bell Lighthouse: A Light in Darkness
Sailors approaching land often dream of relaxing once they arrive. But before 1810, many ships traveling to Scotland were in for a terrible surprise. Eleven miles from the coast, a reef known as the Bell Rock, awaited1 them. During high tides, its jagged rocks were completely hidden underwater. Ships could be suddenly destroyed on the rock, only a few miles from their destination.2
Robert Stevenson, a religious,3 29-year-old engineer, wanted to save lives. He believed science could remove the darkness and illuminate4 the workings of God. Stevenson imagined a lighthouse on the Bell Rock. It would use flashing red and white lanterns to warn ships of the danger underwater. The tower’s base would resemble5 an oak tree, so it could survive powerful storms.
But, there was a huge problem. No one had ever built a lighthouse in the open sea. When Stevenson met with town leaders, they laughed at him. The Bell Rock was submerged in the ocean for 22 hours a day. They told him his idea was silly. But, Stevenson never gave up. At home, he did experiments to prove his lighthouse could work.
