87 Children Die in School Fire in Southern India
Parents cremated the already charred bodies of their children Saturday after a devastating fire that swept through a school in rural Indi-a, killing at least 87 children. Some officials said the teachers fled the burning thatched-roof building with-out helping their students escape.
The fire started in a kitchen and jumped across the flammable roots of the private Lord Krishna Middle School. The death toll rose to 87 as four more students succumbed to burn in-jures at a government hospital.
A senior fire officer said all the teachers survived the blaze on Friday because they abandoned the children and fled to save themselves.
But a district government adminis-trator said it was too early to lay blame, noting that some 700 stu-dents survived the fire and their es-cape was likely aided by teachers.
