Earthquake hits north-west China

A strong earthquake has hit north-western China near the border with Kazakstan, killing at least 11 people and injuring 34 others.

Chinese media reports the quake registered 6.1 on the Richter scale when it struck mid-morning.

我国地方媒体报道，此次地震级别为六点一级。发生时间为北京时间上午九时三十八分。

The Xinhua News Agency says the quake has also toppled around 700 homes, and damaged more than 140 others.

新华社报道，地震震倒了700多间房屋，另外还有超过140间房屋受到损坏。

In February, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Kashgar at the far western edge of China, killing about 300 people, and injuring more than 4,000.

China has stepped up its battle against HIV/AIDS in recent months, pledging free drugs to people in the countryside and poor urban residents who have the disease.
