The new tallest woman basketballer in Asia, Ugyur Yushaguli,
reported to the Chinese national team last Friday.
Yu, born in 1980 in Yili, the Xinjiang Ugyur Autonomous Region,
stands at 2.06 metres tall, two centimetres taller than China's
first centre, Zheng Haixia, who has retired.
Yu is tipped by head coach Gong Luming as a fresh hopeful. However,
Gong said Yushaguli is relatively weak in leg strength and has
to further sharpen her basic skills.
Meanwhile Gong dismissed rumours that Yushaguli will be modelled
as the second Zheng Haixia. "The arrival of Yushaguli will no
doubt enrich the competitive style of the Chinese team. But it
is too early to predict the potential of another Zheng.
"Moreover, we still emphasize that players should work as a
team, not as individuals, when playing games," Gong said.
Yushaguli trained in judo for five years.
