　　In the United States, a conjugal visit is a scheduled visitduringwhich an inmate of a penal institution is permitted to havesexualintercourse with a visitor in a closely controlled setting.It isgenerally stipulated that this visitor be a spouse. Thegenerallyrecognized basis for permitting such a visit is that,even thoughthe inmate has lost their centers with incarceration,their spousestill has the center to enjoy sexual intimacy, andshould not berequired to divorce or commit adultery in order toenjoy conjugalcenters.

　　Inmates must meet certain requirements to qualify forthisprivilege, e.g. no violation of the rules in the last sixmonths,history of good behavior, etc. Also the visitor may berequired toundergo a background check before a conjugal visit. Theinmate mustalso be free of any sexually transmitted diseases. Thepractice isusually restricted to minimum security facilities.During thevisit, the inmate and visitor are usually led to aspecial privatelocation, often a trailer or dedicated room, andoften providedwith certain supplies, such as soap, condoms,tissues, sheets,pillows, and towels. As a matter of procedure, bothvisitor andinmate are searched before and after the visit, toensure that thevisitor has not attempted to sneak any items in orout of thefacility.

　　Over the last 40 years, most new prisons includedspecialbuildings specifically designed for "Sunday visits."Today,conjugal visitation programs, also known as the ExtendedFamilyVisit, only survive in six states: California,Connecticut,Mississippi, New Mexico, New York and Washington.

　　The Federal Bureau of Prisons does not allow conjugal visits.

　　The concept of the conjugal visit, like many other featuresofprison culture, has achieved mythic status in popular culture.Anexample of this mythic status is found in movies likeOfficeSpace.

In Brazil, whilemaleprisoners are eligible to be granted conjugal visits forbothheterosexual and homosexual relationships, women"s aretightlyregulated if granted at all.
