Todays infants are twice as likely to suffer from skinproblemsthan their parents, a British survey of 2000 parents hasfound. Andscientists in Europe have found infants who swimregularly inchlorinated indoor pools are more at risk of developingasthma andbronchitis.
Child-care experts say parents are ignoring advice to limitbathsto two to three times a week due to concerns about keepingbabiesclean and germ free.
The British Mother And Baby magazine survey found six out of10babies were bathed every day, 20 per cent were bathed everyotherday and only 19 per cent were bathed the recommended two tothreetimes a week.
In addition, 60 per cent of mothers used antiseptic wipes ontheirchildrens faces and hands, some more than five times aday.
Mother And Baby editor Elena Dalrymple said a babys skin wasfivetimes thinner than an adults and required verygentletreatment.
Its not a good idea to bath baby every day. Two or three timesaweek is plenty, she said.
Anne ONeill, a dermatologist at the Childrens HospitalatWestmead, said babies did not get dirty until theybegancrawling.
We really dont have to be quite as fastidious unless thechildhas an immune deficiency, she said.
The survey found 37 per cent of baby boys and 33 per cent ofbabygirls had skin problems - more than double that of theirparentsgeneration.
Meanwhile, a European study published in the journalPediatricsthis month found exposure to chemicals in indoor swimmingpoolsmight alter the lining of the lungs, predisposing infants toairwaydisease in later years.
The lead author, Alfred Bernard of Belgiums National FundforScientific Research, said a possible culprit was thechemicaltrichloramine, a by-product of the chlorine used to cleanpublicpools.
