　　The Patriot: Historical inaccuracies&controversies　　The film has been heavily criticized for itshistoricalinaccuracies, including the invention or exaggeration ofBritishatrocities. Most criticized was a scene depicting thetorching of achurch containing a towns inhabitants. This scenealone isoutrageous considering the notoriety the Boston Massacre,whichkilled only a handful of colonists. Even supportableatrocities,such as the killing of prisoners are inaccuratelydepicted, withredcoats sending roving firing squads to dispatch thewounded. Insuch instances however, the British were known forsimply using thebayonet, as powder use in the field had to becontrolled due toregular resupply difficulties. Also in the film,Martin justifiesthe described atrocities against the Cherokee inthe French andIndian War by stating that the Cherokee broke theirtreaty with theFrench. Although at war with the colonies ofCarolina and Virginia,the Cherokee never formally allied themselveswith the French.Although it went generally unnoticed by casualaudiences,historians also criticized the depiction ofAmerican-owned slavesbeing freed to serve in the Continental Army.It was actually theDunmore Proclamation made by the British Armywhich first announcedconditional freedom to slaves who joined them,a fact which isacknowledged by the film when Colonel Tavingtontells blacksworking for Martin that slaves who fight for TheCrown will begranted their freedom upon an English victory. Thenew Americangovernment would maintain legalized chattel slaveryuntil theThirteenth Amendment was ratified in 1865. Although it istrue thatBlacks fought on both sides in the Revolution, the SouthCarolinaassembly resolutely refused to allow blacks - either slaveor free- into the state militia, contrary to what one sees in thisfilm.Here Martin is no slaveholder, but a farmer who employsblackworkers for a salary, a labor relationship that was very rareincolonial South Carolina. There are also characters thatarehistorically misplaced, such as the inclusion of BritishGeneralCornwallis at the final battle, which is allegedly based ontheBattle of Cowpens. Even then, the time of year is wrong, andthenumbers of troops and artillery greatly exaggerated.BenjaminMartin is a combination of Thomas Sumter, Andrew Pickens,Brig.Gen. Francis Swamp Fox Marion and Col. Daniel Morgan,whosestrategy for the Battle of Cowpens Emmerich imitates in theclimax.Col. William Tavington is based on General Sir BanastreBloodyBanny Tarleton.
