A Chinese campaign to clean up online pornography hasreachedcollege campuses with the Education Ministry lashing out atsomeschool bulletin board systems (BBS) for making money fromporn.
We strongly condemn Web site hosts for making unlawful moneybydistributing pornographic information, Vice-Minister ofEducationLi Weihong said.
Student netizens are easily influenced and perverted bysuchinformation as they are still in their formative years and donothave a solid grip on the center values, she said.
Li said the ministry would open a section on its website forthepublic to report on campus websites and is drafting guidelinestoregulate campus Internet services.
She also called on college instructors to be Internet expertstoget to know the mentality of todays students from the net.
Media reports have said that nearly half of the 23 millionminorInternet surfers in China visit porn websites.
To offer the youngsters a clean Internet, the Ministry ofPublicSecurity and nine other government departments launched asix-monthcampaign in April to crack down on online activities suchasdistributing pornographic materials and organizing cyberstripshows.
A report from the Ministry of Public Security released overtheweekend showed that the anti-porn campaign had shownresults.
From April 12 - when the campaign started - to May 15,policeauthorities have blocked more than 4,800 porn websitesandadvertisements. Nearly 160,000 bits of onlineinformation,including 90,000 about pornography and others onillegal gamblingand drug selling, have also been filtered duringthe period, thereport shows.
Police also cracked 244 online porn crimes and caught morethan270 suspects by mid-May, according to the report.
It has been a peoples war, said Zhang Xinfeng, vice-ministerofpublic security. He added that police authorities across thecountryhad received more than 12,000 public reports on pornwebsites.
Zhang said according to police investigations, more than90percent of the porn contents, such as pictures and movies, arefromabroad, especially Chinese-language porn websites based inothercountries.
But the government can only block the foreign websites becauseitcannot shut them down.
The vice-minister also revealed that the government wouldassignmore virtual cops to monitor and wipe out online porn.Theexperiment is confined to nine cities and the ministry saiditplanned to expand it to 100 cities.
