　　Gaultier never received formal training as a designer. Instead,hestarted sending sketches to famous couture stylists at an earlyage.Pierre Cardin was impressed by his talent and hired him asanassistant in 1970.

　　His first individual collection was released in 1976 andhischaracteristic irreverent style dates from 1981, and he haslongbeen known as the enfant terrible (bad boy) of French fashion.Manyof Gaultiers following collections have been based on streetwear,focusing on popular culture, whereas others, particularly hisHauteCouture collections, are very formal yet at the same timeunusualand playful. Jean-Paul Gaultier produced sculptured costumesforMadonna during the nineties and has also worked inclosecollboration with Wolford Hosiery. He promoted the use ofskirts,especially kilts on mens wardrobe, and the release ofdesignercollections. Gaultier caused shock by using unconventionalmodelsfor his exhibitions, like older men and full-figured women,piercedand heavily tattooed models, and by playing with traditionalgenderroles in the shows. This granted him both criticism andenormouspopularity.

　　Gaultier also designed the wardrobe of many motionpictures,including Luc Bessons The Fifth Element, PedroAlmodóvars Kika,Peter Greenaways The Cook, the Thief, His Wife& Her Lover,and Jean-Pierre Jeunets La Cité des enfants perdus(The City ofLost Children). Madonnas Blond Ambition Tour(including the iconiccone bra) also featured his creations. Hecurrently designs forthree collections: his own couture andready-to-wear lines, as wellas the newly relaunched clothing linefor Hermès, a French leathergoods company well-known for theirequestrian background, scarves,and expensive and difficult toobtain handbags. 　　Jean-Paul Gaultier is also known for a popular line ofperfumes.His first fragrance, Classique, a womens floral-oriental,wasintroduced in 1993, followed by Le M?le for men two yearslater.Both were highly successful, and Le M?le is now thenumber-onemens fragrance in the European Union based on sales; italso holdsa strong market position in Australia and the UnitedStates. Histhird fragrance, the womens fragrance Fragile, wasintroduced in2000; however, it is now in limited distribution dueto poor sales.In 2005, the unisex fragrance for humanityGaultier? (pronouncedGaultier to the power of two) was launched(except in Canada, whereit was launched in January 2006, and theUnited States, where itwas launched in August 2006). A new mensfragrance, Fleur du Male,will be launched worldwide in April 2007.All Jean-Paul Gaultierperfumes are produced under a long-termlicense by Paris-basedBeaute Prestige International, a division ofthe Japanese companyShiseido that also produces fragrances forNarciso Rodriguez andIssey Miyake.
