西科德专门从事犬画领域已有20多年,他撰写了多本这方面的书籍,其中包括《BestinShow: The Dog in Art from the Renaissance toToday》(耶鲁大学出版社(YaleUniversityPress),2006年出版)。

Luxuryretailersfrom Burberry to Gucci have long harnessed the salespotential ofpampered pooches. Auction houses too are benefitingfrom thedevotion of a dog-loving clientele as the market forcanineportraiture continues to boom.A decade ago, the majority ofworks ofart featuring dogs were hammered down in London and wentfortrifling amounts. “Now upwards of 70 per cent of the paintingsinour dog art sales are air-freighted from London but more than 90percent of the buyers are Americans,” says Alan Fausel, head offineart at Bonhams New York .As for prices, in February 2006 theauctionhouse held a dog speciality sale at its Madison Avenueoutpost, andFausel rang up a stupendous $842,250 for a John Emms1898 oil “NewForest Foxhounds”. It was a world record for any dogportrayal andfor the work of the British painter; in 2001, the topprice for anEmms painting was $192,750.“Dog portraiture reallybegan inEngland,” says William Secord, a Manhattan dealer whohasspecialised in this genre for more than two decades and haswrittenbooks on the subject including Best in Show: The Dog in Artfromthe Renaissance to Today (Yale University Press, 2006). Thegoldenage of pet portraiture spanned from 1840-1910, during whichtimeQueen Victoria helped to spearhead its popularity as she likedtocommission portraits of her dogs; the aristocracy andgentryfollowed suit.“But after the first world war, the popularityof, and the prices for, that genre declined,” says Secord. In thepastfive years all that has changed. Secord says his sales of dogarthave jumped by 80 per cent.He has also witnessed a broadeningofmarket interest far beyond Manhattan. He points to hisrecentparticipation in the Palm Beach-based Americas InternationalFineArt & Antique Fair and Marchs Thomasville Antiques ShowinGeorgia, where Secord sold a Jules-Bertrand Gelibert 1881 oilofeight French hounds resting after a hunt at Fontainebleaufor$64,000.“As Thomasville is really the centre of quailhunting, there are many collectors of dog paintings there,” saysSecord. Hehas also sold a 19th-century English dog painting to theHoustonMuseum of Fine Arts.“Americans adore dogs,” says MarioBuatta, aNew York designer who furnished one clients Fifth Avenueapartmentwith 25 dog pictures. Other A-list Manhattan decoratorscatering totheir clients taste for canine chic include CharlotteMoss andBunny Williams.Consumer interest has spread beyond the US.InFebruary, both Bonhams and Doyle in New York scheduledspecialistcanine sales on the same day, clustered around thecitysWestminster Kennel Club for dogs, and pegged to the clubsown dogshow. They drew an impressive attendance of 40,000-plus andbothwitnessed a flurry of buyers from abroad. At Doyles, now initsninth year of annual Dogs in Art auctions, bidderswereinternational. “For the first time we had buyers fromabroad, including Britain and France,” says Elaine Stainton,Doylespainting specialist.Arabs with Connecticut homes werescooping uppictures, as were Canadians, while Australians werebidding byphone. In this setting, a Percival Leonard Rosseau 1931oil of twosetters soared above its $40,000-$60,000 estimate andsold for$210,000 to a British buyer Secord sold a Rosseau in 2003for$90,000.Bonhams sale of dog-themed paintings, decorandmemorabilia raised close to $1m. The star of the sale, ringingup$101,059, was the 1893 oil painting “Setters” by Thomas Blinks, whoexhibited at Londons Royal Academy. “Buyers were from HongKong,Britain and Austria as well as here,” says Fausel. It wasBonhamsLondon that took the lead in marketing dogs in art as aspecialitysale exactly 25 years ago. Other London auction housesregularlyincluded this niche in general sporting art sales. “OurDog in Artsales in London in the early 1980s never totalled morethan£250,000,” says Charlie OBrien, Bonhams London specialistin19th-century painting.Fausel, who previously headed DoylesYorkspainting department, orginally established the houses Dogsin Artsale. Last year, he moved to Bonhams and replicated theauctionthere.Clients, says Fausel, zero in on artists such asThomasBlinks, John Emms, Henriette Ronner-Knip, Edmund Bristow,EdmundHenry Osthaus and John Dalby, all of whom featured inBonhams mostrecent sale.As with regular portraiture, the subjectmatter counts– although in dog paintings, breed determines thearistocraticlevel of the sitters. “Setters, spaniels and terriersare most indemand,” says Fausel. Now, Christies is entering thecanineportraiture scene. Last month it showcased highlights fromitsfirst Dog Art auction, to take place on June 22, duringtheWestminster dog show. These included Victorian painter SirEdwinLandseers 1824 “Neptune”, which portrays alife-sizedNewfoundland, a breed synonymous with bravery(estimate:$800,000-$1,200,000). Perhaps affirming the heroic natureof thedog, the painting is framed with timbers from the famousHMSTemeraire, a battleship that fought at the Battle of Trafalgarin1805. Most of the paintings in the auction come from a privateUScollection.“We know that the sale will attract buyers fromFrance,England, Ireland, Germany and possibly even Turkey,” saysJamesHastie, Christies London expert. The success of dog portraitsatauction is now generating interest in accompanying areas.Doyle, for example, included dogs in porcelain and silver in its NewYorksale. Bonhams too is expanding to include an auction devoted todogcollars next year. This will feature collars with a royalpedigree, having previously belonged to dogs owned by the Duke andDuchess ofWindsor.(实习编辑:顾萍)
