　　The style His Majesty or Her Majesty (HM) is enjoyed by a King,aQueen (regnant), a Queen consort, and a former Queen consort(aQueen Dowager or a Queen Mother).　　Mrs of the Royal Family in the Royal box at WestminsterAbbeyduring the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.Use of the styleHisRoyal Highness or Her Royal Highness (HRH) and the titulardignityof Prince or Princess are governed by Letters Patent issuedby KingGeorge V on 30 Novr1917 (published in the London Gazette on11 Decr1917). These Letters Patent state that henceforth, onlythechildren of the Sovereign, the children of the sons oftheSovereign, and the eldest son of the eldest son of The PrinceofWales would have and at all times hold and enjoy the style,titleor attribute of Royal Highness with their titular dignity ofPrinceor Princess prefixed to their respective Christian names orwiththeir other titles of honour. They further state,thegrandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the directmaleline (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son ofthePrince of Wales) shall have the style and title enjoyed bythechildren of Dukes.

　　Under these conventions, The Queens children and the childrenofThe Prince of Wales and The Duke of York are titled PrincesorPrincesses and styled Royal Highness. Likewise, The DukeofGloucester, The Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra, the Hon.LadyOgilvy, and Prince Michael of Kent enjoy the titular dignityofPrince or Princess and the style Royal Highness asmale-linegrandchildren of King George V. However, none of theirchildren hasa royal title. For example, the children of PrinceMichael of Kentare known as Lord Frederick Windsor and LadyGabriella Windsor (thecourtesy titles as children of dukes). Theyare not entitled to anyroyal title. The children of The PrincessRoyal, PrincessAlexandra, and the late Princess Margaret, Countessof Snowdon, arenot entitled to any royal title since princesses donot transmittheir titles to their children unless they are theheiresspresumptive. Princess Margarets son enjoys the courtesytitleViscount Linley as the son and heir of the Earl of Snowdon,whileher daughter enjoys the courtesy title Lady. The children ofthePrincess Royal and Princess Alexandra have no titles,becauseCaptain Mark Philips and Sir Angus Ogilvy do not holdhereditarypeerages.

　　Women marrying sons and male-line grandsons of a Sovereignarenormally styled Her Royal Highness followed by thefeminisedversion of her husbands highest title. The wives of royalpeersare known as HRH The Duchess of ... or HRH The Countess of...Thus, the wives of the Duke of Kent, the Duke of Gloucester,andthe Earl of Wessex are HRH The Duchess of Kent, HRH TheDuchessof Gloucester, and HRH The Countess of Wessex,respectively.Before her divorce, the late Diana, Princess of Walesenjoyed thetitle and style of HRH The Princess of Wales. However,when awoman marries a prince who does not hold a peerage, she isknown asHRH Princess Her husbands Christian name, followed bywhateverterritorial or titular designation. For example, theformerBaroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz enjoys the title andstyle ofHRH Princess Michael of Kent, and not HRHPrincessMarie-Christine of Kent. Similarly, the former BirgitteEva vanDeurs was titled HRH Princess Richard of Gloucester fromherwedding until her husband succeeded to his fathers Dukedomin1974. The widows of princes remain HRH. However, underQueenElizabeth IIs 21 August 1996 Letters Patent, a divorced wifeof aPrince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Irelandshallnot be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title orattribute ofRoyal Highness.

　　There has been one exception to the convention that wivesofprinces take their husbands rank. In Letters Patent dated 28May1937, King George VI specifically denied the style HRH to thewifeof the Duke of Windsor, the former King Edward VIII. Therefore,theformer Wallis Warfield Simpson was known as Her Grace TheDuchessof Windsor, not Her Royal Highness The Duchess ofWindsor.

　　It should also be noted due a reluctance by the publictouniversally support the second wife of The Prince of Wales, ithasbeen announced by Clarence House that should The Prince ofWalesbecome King, that his wife HRH The Duchess of Cornwall willnot beknown as HM The Queen but will take the lesser title of HRHThePrincess Consort. Out of respect for the late Diana, PrincessofWales, it was also announced that HRH The Duchess of Cornwallwouldnot be known as HRH The Princess of Wales. 2

　　As grandchildren of the Sovereign through the female line,thechildren of the then Princess Elizabeth and The Duke ofEdinburghwould not have been entitled to use HRH or Prince orPrincess untiltheir mother became Queen, had those titles andstyles not beengranted in Letters Patent of 22 October 1948.

　　Finally, on the wedding day of HRH The Earl of Wessex to thethenMiss Sophie Rhys-Jones, Buckingham Palace announced that,withagreement of HM The Queen and TRH The Earl and Countess ofWessex,any children they have would not be given the style His orHerRoyal Highness, but would have courtesy titles as sons ordaughtersof an earl. HRH The Countess of Wessex gave birth to adaughter on8 Novr 2003. The press secretary to the Queen announcedthat theinfant would be styled the Lady Louise Windsor.
