In Nanjing, east Chinas Jiangsu Province, the partialeclipseoccurred from 9:25 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, in which themooncovered about 20 percent of the sun, according to WangSichao,researcher with Zijinshan Astronomical Observatory undertheChinese Academy of Sciences.
Sky gazers in northeastern Jilin, central Henan, easternShandongProvinces and northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Regionalsowitnessed the partial eclipse.
In western China, 70 percent of the sun was eclipsed butinBeijing, however, cloudy and drizzly weather deprivedenthusiastsof the chance of seeing their first partial eclipsesince 1997.
Those who missed this one will have opportunities to seetotalsolar eclipses on August 1, 2008 and July 22, 2009, and apartialeclipse on January 15, 2010, Wang said.
During the last century (1901- 1999), 78 partial and 71totalsolar eclipses have been reported worldwide.
Chinese astronomers are believed to have been the first torecordsolar eclipses more than 3,000 years ago.
