Mainlandtelephoneoperators have almost restored communications disruptedby anearthquake off the southern coast of Taiwan last month thatseveredundersea cables .China Telecom, the countrys largestfixed-linecarrier, said in a statement issued at 4pm yesterdaythat it hadbasically restored all its international call andInternetservices over the weekend after repairing the maincable.The FNALcable carries most of Chinas telecommunicationswith North Americaand Internet connections with the rest of theworld, said Guan Li,spokeswoman for China Telecom.But Guan refusedto say how much losswas caused by the cable breakdown.In a similarstatement issuedhours later, China Netcom, the nationssecond-largest telecomoperator, said it had basically restoredits internationaltelecommunication service, especially with NorthAmerica.It sharesthe FNAL cable with China Telecom.Both statementssaid that severalother cables which carry a small portion of thetraffic would befully repaired in the next two weeks.A Decr 26earthquake measuring7.1 on the Richter scale cut several underseacables near Taiwan,slowing the mainlands access to overseaswebsites to a crawl andaffecting international calls.Thegovernment and telephone operatorsthen initiated emergencyplans.Most of the international Internettraffic was re-routed vialandline cables connecting China andEurope, and satellitetransmission was also used, a China Telecomspokeswoman saidearlier.The telecom regulator in Hong Kong, whichwas hit harder asit relies more on submarine cables, yesterday saidmost of theseven submarine cables damaged by the temblor have nowbeen fixed,adding that one will take longer than estimated becauseof badweather.The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA)saidrepair work would be completed at the end of February, insteadofmid-February as had been anticipated earlier.Badweather,technical problems and other reasons are causing thedelay, saidOFTA Director-General Au Man-ho.However, he saidInternet providershad diverted Web traffic and that the delay wasnot having asignificant impact on Internet services in HongKong.According toour reports from the providers, all services arelargely back tonormal its approaching 100 percent, hesaid.Vocabulary:
