TOKYO - A Japanese woman charged with inflicting(造成)injury onherneighbor by blasting rock music at her house for more thantwoyears was given a 20-month prison term Tuesday, a courtofficialsaid.Miyoko Kawahara, 59, was sentenced by the Osaka HighCourt,revoking(撤回)an initial ruling that had given her a one-yearprisonterm, court spokesman Takanao Kawasaki said.Kawahara inHeguri,Nara Prefecture (state) in western Japan, was accused ofcausinginsomnia(失眠)and headaches to her next-door neighbor byplaying louddance music almost 24 hours a day on a portable stereoshe hadpointed at her neighbors house, 20 feet away.She wasarrested onApril 11, 2005. The two women had had a number ofdisagreementsthat police did not elaborate on(详细说明).Thedefendant(被告)ignoredcalls by local authorities and continuouslyplayed music at a highvolume for some 29 months, Kyodo News agencyquotedpresiding(首席法官)Judge Hiroshi Furukawa as telling thecourt.Inhanding down a longer prison term than a local court rulinginApril, this year, Furukawa told the court that the defendantstillmaintains a hostile(敌对的)ttitude toward the victim and it ishighlylikely she will commit the crime again, Kyodo said.Doctorshaddiagnosed the neighbor as having insomnia and headachestheyattributed to the noise. Kawahara started blasting the musicinNovr 2002 and continued until her arrest.Under Japanese law,thoseconvicted of inflicting injury on another person face up to10years in prison and a fine of up to 300,000 yen ($2,520).
