Fabio Cannavaro was voted FIFA Player of the Year onMonday,becoming the first defender to earn the honor and only thesecondItalian.Brazilian midfielder Marta was voted FIFA WomensPlayer ofthe Year, with U.S. forward Kristine Lilly finishingsecond.
The 33-year-old Cannavaro, who captained Italy to its fourthWorldCup title, finished with 498 points in voting by nationalteamcoaches and captains.
It is indeed more difficult for a defender to come thisfar,Cannavaro said.
Zinedine Zidane was second with 454 points. He was votedtopplayer at the World Cup despite his ejection in the finalforhead-butting Marco Materazzi in overtime.
Ronaldinho, who won the award in 2004 and 2005, was third with380points.
The only other Italian voted world player of the year by FIFAwasRoberto Baggio in 1993, two years after the award began. Thiswas atumultuous year for Italian soccer, which was upended by ascandalin which team officials were found to have fixedrefereeassignments for Serie A games.
I would like to dedicate this award to Italianfootball,Cannavaro said. Everyone knows that we have hadproblems, and thisshould be a moment of rebirth for Italianfootball.
Former U.S. coach Bruce Arena voted Ronaldinho first, followedbyCannavaro and Thierry Henry. Former U.S. captain Claudio ReynahadRonaldinho first, followed by Andrea Pirlo and Deco.
Marta topped the voting for the womens award with 475points.Lilly had 388 and German midfielder Renate Lingor was thirdwith305.
I dont feel much pressure. I just want to keep playing atmylevel, said the 20-year-old Marta, who was preventedfromcompeting in the FIFA Under-20 Womens World Championship thisyearby her Swedish club, Umea IK.
Marta finished second behind Germanys Birgit Prinz lastyear.
