Diana, Princess of Wales, smiles as she arrives at the TateGalleryin London in this Tuesday July 1, 1997 file photo.[AP/file]
A British police inquiry ruled Thursday that Princess Dianawasnot the victim of a murder plot when she died in a tragiccaraccident in 1997.Dianas death triggered a string ofconspiracytheories that British spies or even herex-husband,heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, had plotted theaccident becauseher relationship with Dodi al Fayed wasembarrassing the royalhousehold.
Im satisfied that no attempt has been made to holdbackinformation and we are confident that the allegations madeareunfounded, former police chief John Stevens said afterathree-year probe into Dianas death in a Paris road tunnel.
On the evidence available now, there was no conspiracy tomurderany of the occupants of that car. This was a tragicaccident,Stevens told reporters.
Stevens told reporters Diana was not pregnant at the time ofherdeath and was not engaged and was not about to getengaged.
Diana, Fayed and their chauffeur Henri Paul died whentheirlimousine hit a pillar in the Paris road tunnel in August1997.
A two-year French inquiry blamed the crash on Paul, saying hewasdrunk, under the influence of anti-depressants and drivingtoofast.
The top-level British investigation was ordered by formerroyalcoroner Michael Burgess in January 2004 when he opened aBritishinquest into Dianas death.
Stevens, who headed Londons police force, spent almostthreeyears investigating what happened and interviewed Charlesforseveral hours as part of his inquiry.
He also talked to Prince Charles father, the Duke ofEdinburgh.Stevens said there was no evidence to link the Duke toBritainsintelligence service MI6 as alleged by Dodis father,Mohamed alFayed.
I very much hope that all the work we have done andthepublication of this report will help to bring some closure toallwho continue to mourn the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales,Dodial Fayed and Henri Paul, Stevens said in his report.
Findings denied
Even before the report was published, Mohamed al Fayed hadrailedagainst its findings, calling them outrageous andclaimingStevens had been blackmailed by British intelligence chiefsintoruling out foul play.
The Harrods department storeowner, who wants a public inquiryintothe crash, believes his son and Diana were murdered byBritishsecret services because their relationship was embarrassingtheBritish royal family.
Before the probes findings were revealed, the plot thickenedevenfurther with claims in British tabloids that Americanspiesmonitored the phone in Dianas Ritz Hotel room withouttheknowledge of their British spy counterparts.
Rubbish was the curt reaction from the CIA.Al Fayed, speakingonNBCs Today Show, said his son had bought an engagement ringforDiana and that she had told him hours before the crash that shewaspregnant.Whatever happened to the Fiat Uno is anotherquestionconstantly posed by conspiracy theorists.Paul swerved toavoid themysterious Fiat Uno just before the crash. It has neverbeenfound. And further fuel was added to the fire by Dianas butlerPaulBurrell, the man she called My Rock.Diana said in aletterwritten to Burrell 10 months before her death My husbandisplanning an accident in my car, brake failure and seriousheadinjury.British and French authorities hope the Stevens reportwillat long last bring closure but, with his grief still fuelledbyrage, al Fayed shows no signs of ever giving up.Vocabulary:
