Beijing residents have warned to stay indoors due tohighpollution levels, as a blanket of heavy smog across northernChinacaused traffic chaos and delayed flights throughouttheregion.Under these weather conditions it is better toreduceoutdoor activities especially in areas where pollutantsareconcentrated such as where traffic is heavy, theBeijingenvironmental protection bureau said on its websiteMonday.
Residents should take measures to protect themselves in ordernotto breathe heavily polluted air.
During the 24-hour period from Sunday noon, Beijings airqualitywas rated a hazardous four on a scale of five, the bureausaid,with five representing the worst level of pollution.
Besides the regular car pollution, the bad air quality wasalsodue to the citys 6,000 coal-fire heating furnaces and up totwomillion home coal burners that went into operation this monthtoprovide the capital with heat, it said.
Meanwhile the blanket of smog caused traffic chaos as driverswerecenter lined up at numerous highways that were shut down due totheatmospheric conditions.
Five highways in the capital and eight in neighboring Tianjinwereshut down beginning late Sunday due to the fog, whichreducedvisibility in some places to as low as 100 meters, Xinhuanewsagency reported.
During Beijings early morning rush hour Monday, 154accidentswere reported, with some of the incidents due to heavysmog, thereport said.
Fog was worse in northeastern Liaoning province andeasternShandong province where air flights in and out of theregions weredelayed since Sunday, sete reports said.
Beijing has set an ambitious annual target of realizing blueskydays of level two air quality or better 65 percent ofthetime.
As of Novr 14, the city had registered 213 blue sky daysandneeded an additional 25 more clean air days by the end of theyearto reach the target, the environmental bureau said.
We still have hopes to fulfill this years task, it can bedonebut it will be a serious challenge and we must not takethislightly, it said in a report.
Beijing, a city of 15 million people, is regarded as one ofthemost heavily polluted in China, although authorities aretryingdesperately to improve the situation ahead of the 2008OlympicGames.
