Success in farming and success inbusiness each canimprove a countrys standing. I think thatagricultural researchtends to improve the quality of individualcitizens lives, whereassuccessful business practices improve acountrys economy inrelation to other nations. Choosing between anagricultural and abusiness research center is a difficultdecision. However, I believethat the agricultural research centerwould be most beneficialbecause its benefits are morewidespread.Business practices in theUnited States already serve asa model for many other countries.While we certainly have much tolearn, the U.S. already has a fairlysolid economic basis. Further,businesses are already well-connectedinternationally. They havethe advantage of the Internet and othermeans of electronicinformation transmission. I think that abusiness research centerwould really only help a few directly.Businessmen would getricher. For the rest of the countrys people,there might be littleobvious benefit.On the other hand, anagricultural research centerwould help all people. No country cansurvive without adequatemeans of food production. While the U.S. isable to produce orimport enough food now, that may not remain thecase if currenttrends continue. Natural resources are eroding, andmore and moreAmerican farms are closing. Farmers need to buildstronger networksacross the country and internationally, much asbusinessmen alreadyhave done. Ultimately, better systems forfarming will help allpeople. For example, food prices can bereduced as farmers discovermore effective means of foodproduction.Morally, I believe that itis best to do what willbenefit the most people. I believe that theuniversitys decision tobuild an agricultural research centercould do just that.Topic:129Since the announcement of theUniversitys plan to develop a newresearch center in our country,many people have showed theirconcern for the project and expressedtheir views of type of centerit should be. It is now clear thatthe diversified views haveconverged to two: a business researchcenter or an agricultureresearch center. Now that we have to makea decision, I think weshould choosse the latter wothouthesitation.As everybody knows, ourcountry is an agriculturalcountry whose farming produce is notenough to feed its own people.We have no way out but to develop ouragriculture becauseagriculture is the foundation of our nationaleconomy and becauseit would be a disaster to the whole world if werely on foreignfood to feed the biggest population in the world.Todevelop ouragriculture, we cannot just call on the peasants to workharderbecause they have being working the hardest from generationtogeneration. What we should do is to raise their educationalleveland provide them with beter seeds, more fertilizers,advancedmachinery and equipment, and up-to-date technical advises.Inshort, we have to rely on science and technology to developouragriculture.Some people would say that this cannot be aconvincingreason because science and technology are neded not onlyinagriculture but also in all other fields. My view is thatoursituation in agriculture is the most serious and the challengesarethe greatest. Ours is a big country with widely differentclimatesand soil conditions. If we are to assist the peasants, wehave tostudy all types of crops and all the farming conditions inthisland. With a research center, these problems can be studiedandsolved systematically. But so far, no agriculture researchcenterworthy of the name has been set up while there is alreadyabusiness center in the southern part of the country.Because oftheabove reasons, I strongly recommend that we develop aresearchcenter for agriculture purpose and I also stronglyrecommend thiscenter be well funded. If wee take this step andsucceed in thisendeavour, our agricultural produce will be greatlyincreased andour whole national economy will ahve a solidfoundation.
