　　Overweight and obese women are less likely thannormal-weightwomen to keep breastfeeding their infants for sixmonths or longer,a study from Australia shows.

　　Dr. Wendy Hazel Oddy of the Telethon Institute for ChildHealthResearch in Perth and colleagues looked at 1,803 children andtheirmothers participating in a large pregnancy study. Eighteenpercentof the women were overweight or obese before becomingpregnant.

　　Overall, the researchers found, overweight or obese women were76percent more likely to stop breastfeeding before their infantsweresix months old than their normal weight peers.

　　A number of factors could help explain the findings,theinvestigators say. For example, excess weight may change awomanshormonal profile, making sustained lactation more difficult,or itmay be harder for an infant to latch on to breast tissue ifthemother is overweight or obese.
