最近一两年,“模拟联合国”(Model United
Everheard about Model United Nations(MUN)? Miss Mao Hui, a> Senior 2
student from the High School Affiliated to Fudan University has participated in
several influential MUN programs, including the recent one which was held at the
Headquarters of the United Nations in New York City. We believe that her account
of her involvement in MUN programs and her insight into the internationally
popular student activity will bring something new to you.
>SSP: When did you start to learn about Model United Nations(MUN) and
get involved in its various competitions?
Mao Hui: Well... that was about one and a half years ago. At that time, our
school was trying to select representatives for the first MUN Conference for
high school students which was to be held at Peking University, and luckily
enough, I was elected.
SSP: Is MUN very interesting? How?
Mao Hui: Yes, of course! But instead of using the word “interesting”, I
would rather describe it as meaningful. To be a delegate(代表) of an MUN
conference, the first thing you’ll learn is how to think in other people’s
shoes. This is very beneficial for me, I would say. Besides, by cooperating with
people of your own age, you’ll gain a precious opportunity to listen to and
share your viewpoints with students of different backgrounds the world over.
Last but not least, one particular thing that MUN has taught me is that every
single effort can make a difference for the entire >human race.
SSP: So far how many MUN conferences have you been involved in? Which one
do you think is the best? Why?
Mao Hui: Let me see... Um I’ve participated in three MUN conferences which
were held respectively at Peking University, Hong Kong Chinese University and
the UN Headquarters in New York City(NYC). Moreover, I was one of the organizers
and the chairperson of the first MUN conference in our school. It’s really hard
for me to tell which one is the best because you know, the one in Beijing is
actually my first MUN experience, and the one in Hong Kong had an international
party which was really fun, and the one in NYC is certainly the most official
one I’ve ever attended and we had our committee sessions(会议) in the hall where
the real UN conferences take place, really cooooooooool!! But the one held in
our school had my most devotion. It was such a heartwarming experience to hear
your friends say “Hi, Chair” when we met at the corridor.
SSP: You’ve established an MUN society in your school. Why this idea? Was
it very hard?
Mao Hui: That idea came from a talk with one of my friends. She thought
that the MUN activities shouldn’t be limited to several students. The true Model
UN spirit calls for the attention of every single student who has an idea to
express. So with that faith, we established the MUN society in our school. It
took us a pretty long time to get most students to know what MUN is like and
what it is for. One difficulty we ran into while setting up the society was that
many students regarded it as an English competition and they didn’t feel like
joining the society because they lacked confidence in their English. But it is
much better now since most students have come to realize that it’s perfectly
fine as long as they can express themselves logically.
SSP: Since MUN focuses on political and economic issues which seem to
interest boys more than girls, do boys outnumber(数目超过) girls in the MUN
conferences in which you were involved?
Mao Hui: Hehe!! You are completely wrong this time!! On the contrary, we
have more girls than boys working for the MUN society in our school. Boys are
logical in most cases, but girls have an obvious advantage when it comes to
language!
