This winter holiday, I, as an exchange student, together with 10
schoolmates and 3 teachers, flew to Paris for a week’s visit. We settled down
there with local French families, and, our hosts, students from Alain High
School of Paris.
Well, Paris is a fascinating and romantic city without doubt, as you can
see, or even smell, from its historical architecture, wonderful museums,
colorful street sights, and additionally, lovely French girls and boys.
Here I’m going to tell you some details about Paris students who are about
the same age as us.
“I can speak...”
“I can speak French, English, Spanish and Chinese!”
“So can I. And one more: German!”
They told me calmly and a little proudly when asked what languages they
could speak. They said it was very common for French students to command more
than one foreign language. In many French schools, students are required to
learn their first foreign language at 12, and the second about two years later.
Even with this, they have a wider choice of what to learn compared with Chinese
students, like Spanish, German, Italian and so on. Thus, not all French students
can speak English quite well, as some of them may take it as their second or
even third foreign language.
Nevertheless, to almost all of them, foreign language courses are not as
important as other subjects, because they’re seldom required to or even have
chances to use foreign languages such as English in their country.
In fact, as Paris is a very international city, many French students choose
to learn foreign languages just in order to make friends from all over the
world. Only a few of them have ever thought about the kind of international job
they’ll get while learning foreign languages.
“My hobbies are...”
French students have a variety of hobbies like us Chinese teenagers. Most
of them have their idols, a singer, a dancer, an actor, etc. Interestingly, my
friend Julia found that her host student had the same favourite movie star as
hers.
Besides, they also like hip-hop, rock and roll, and other popular
entertainment and sports.
(P.S: To my surprise, quite a few girls have taken up smoking as one of
their “hobbies”. “Smoking is not forbidden but quite popular in French high
schools,” they said, “and we just enjoy the smell of cigarettes!”)
“We French are...”
“We French are lazy, stupid, obtuse(迟钝的)...” they often joked like that,
laughing loudly. “We are less clever than you Chinese.”
Actually, a short stay with them has left a deep impression on my mind that
French students are friendly, passionate(热情的), hospitable(好客的), humourous,
creative, outgoing(外向的), patient, modest and lovable. During the weekdays, we
talked about school life and personal interests every night; at the weekend,
they showed us around Paris and helped us do some shopping in those famous
shopping centres. Their bright personality attracted me a lot; and I found we
had much in common though we were from totally different cultural
backgrounds.
