South Korean commercial banks saw their losses shrink sharply last year on reduced provisions for bad loans and stronger interest income, financial regulators said yesterday. Combined net losses at 17 commercial banks fell from 5.99 trillion won (US$4.6 billion) in 1999 to 2.84 trillion (US$2.18 billion) last year, the Financial Supervisory Commission said. Their return-on-asset ratio stood at minus 0.59 per cent in 2000, compared with minus 0.84 per cent a year ago, it said.
