原文:
The mid-sized Tokyo Mutual Life Insurance Co collapsed yesterday,
the victim of a stock market slump, to become the seventh post-war
failure in Japan’s struggling life assurance industry. The withdrawal
of support from leading creditor Daiwa Bank Ltd dealt the final
blow to the 106-year-old insurer after depressed share prices had
destroyed the value of its investments and policy holders fled.
“We filed today with the Tokyo District Court to start corporate
rehabilitation procedures and the application was granted,” Tokyo
Mutual said in a statement. The insurer had hoped to secure support
from Daiwa Bank for its plans to reach capital agreements with Japanese
and foreign partners.
