Director
Oliver Stone says he may quit making films.
Jan. 17 — In-your-face filmmaker Oliver Stone is promising a kinder,
gentler experience with his next film, Beyond Borders.
In the February issue of Premiere magazine, Stone says the film,
which stars Angelina Jolie and Ralph Fiennes as refugee
relief workers who fall in love, will be a "date movie."
But the gap-toothed auteur had
a bigger bombshell to drop: He's threatening to quit directing altogether.
Premiere's unusual joint interview with Stone and another edgy director,
Requiem for a Dream helmer Darren Aronofsky, finds Stone saying,
"I'm ready to go soon. I'm talking about a final movie."
Aronofsky, who'd been chatting with the Natural Born Killers director
about shared censorship woes,
asks Stone, "What do you mean, 'a final movie'?"
Replies Stone, "A funeral oration … I want to write one movie where
I write everything out and don't worry about the consequences. …
F--k it. Sunset time. You don't have to make movies all your life."
Aronofsky, who's been tapped to direct one of the next Batman films
for Warner Bros., responds, "Awesome."
The 31-year-old newcomer calls Stone "the master," for his advice
on making your own movies your own way in the shark-filled biz.
Says Stone, "Life wears you down, and then the films are stripping
away at something inside yourself. Each film takes something from
you; you're giving up part of your soul every time."
In the interview, Stone reveals that even his own son has pestered
him for making so many bloody, violent films, asking,
"Why do you always have to concentrate on the evil side, Papa?"
When asked whether a movie can make a killer out of someone, as
was alleged in a protracted lawsuit over Natural Born Killers, Stone
responds, "There are accidents all the time. Do you outlaw elevators?
I mean, there's no end to it."
