CNNfn's
John Metaxas delivers his midday report from the Nasdaq MarketSite
in New York's Times Square, Wednesday Jan. 17, 2001. CNN announced
a broad restructuring Wednesday that includes the layoff of at least
400 employees, the appointment of three new senior executives and
several organizational changes. The network is also making several
changes to its programming lineup, including the cancellation of
four business shows, including "Your Money," hosted by Metaxas.
NEW YORK - CNN, the world's first 24-hour cable news channel, said on Wednesday it will cut 400 jobs, or nearly 10 percent of its work force, in a restructuring that includes combining its news Web sites with its TV operations.
The long-rumored cutbacks, the largest in the network's 20-year
history, come at a troubled time for many media companies, which
are grappling with the prospect
of slower advertising growth this year. Earlier this month, News
Corp. (NCX.AX) (NYSE:NWS) and the NBC television network announced
cutbacks, citing a softer advertising market.
In 2000, advertising was boosted by the aggressive campaign of dot-com companies, many of which have failed in the last year. The prospect of a slower overall economy has put pressure on advertising budgets of established companies, as well.
The advertising and broader economic market were not an influence on the decision to cut jobs, CNN's Chief News Executive Eason Jordan said in an interview.
"Obviously, we're mindful of the economic environment and the advertising environment, but they were not drivers in this process," Jordan told Reuters. "All of the moves today grew out of discussions we had four months ago on how we will take CNN into the 21st century. This was before there was any concerns over the economy or advertising."
The network, founded by Ted Turner in 1980 and now owned by AOL Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:AOL), said one-third of the job cuts will come from its interactive unit, including CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/) and CNNfn.com (http://www.cnnfn.com/).
Another third of the cuts will come from the programming division,
and the remainder from other parts of the company. After the cuts,
the company will have 3,900 employees.
Shelby Coffey III, president of CNN Business News and the financial news channel CNNfn, resigned after little more than a year to start a private foundation with his wife, CNN said. He will be replaced by Ken Jautz, managing director of German news channel N-TV, which is 50 percent owned by AOL Time Warner.
One element of the restructuring is a plan to combine the operations of its news Web sites with the television channels.
"The interactive landscape has changed and we must re-examine the
relationship between online and on-air editorial content," said
Jim Walton, president of CNN Domestic
Networks for the CNN News Group, said in a statement.
"The bottom line is that interactive and television network functions
have to be more closely aligned
and placed under a single management structure," he added.
